When I was a child, one of my favorite toys were LEGO building blocks. Instead of creating random objects with a handful of bricks, I would build sets and then display them on my bookshelf as a work of art.
Fast forward twenty years and you can probably guess how I felt when LEGO announced they were releasing a series of Toy Story sets, presumably to promote the release of Toy Story 3. As you probably know, I’m a huge fan of Pixar’s animated films, especially the Toy Story series, so the combination of the film’s characters and one of my favorite toys was a match made in heaven. LEGO released four sets shortly after Christmas 2009 and two more sets less than a week later on January 4, 2010. Those sets are:
- Woody and Buzz to the Rescue (7590)
- Construct-a-Zurg (7591)
- Construct-a-Buzz (7592)
- Buzz’s Star Command Spaceship (7593)
- Woody’s Roundup! (7594)
- Army Men on Patrol (7595)
This weekend, while picking up some items at my local Walmart, I swung by the toy section to see which of the released sets they had for sale. It turned out they had all of them in stock so, after closely examining each box, I opted to purchase Construct-a-Buzz. After returning home, I opened the box and found a few plastic bags filled with all of the bricks needed to construct my own Buzz Lightyear!
With the television on in the background, I sat on the floor and worked my way through the instructions brick-by-brick building my own miniature Space Ranger. After a few minutes, the torso took shape and then it was on to the arms and legs. Thirty minutes later, Construct-a-Buzz was finished, complete with a Squeeze Toy Alien minifigure.
According to the LEGO Toy Story Wikipedia article, additional sets will be released in June, including Trash Compactor Escape, Western Train Chase, Pizza Planet Truck Rescue, Garbage Truck Getaway and Lotso’s Dump Truck.
I think it’s great that LEGO has partnered with Pixar to create these sets and I’d love for them to release additional sets for previous movies. At the top of my want list? Characters from WALL-E and Up. If LEGO created additional sets from other Disney and/or Pixar films, which would you most like to see?
