As was the case with some other letters of the alphabet, I struggled finding a good topic to discuss. I was able to came up with two possibilities, Emperor Zurg and Zazu, and I opted to go with the latter.
In the Disney feature animated film The Lion King, Zazu (voiced by Rowan Atkinson) is a hornbill that serves as King Mufasa’s majordomo. Supremely loyal to Mufasa, Zazu takes on all responsibilities without complaining, even when tasked with babysitting lion cubs Simba and Nala.
In 1998, the Enchanted Tiki Room’s Tropical Serenade was replaced with The Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management). The new show feature many of the same birds as the original, with the addition of the Enchanted Tiki Room’s new owners: Zazu and Iago, the loud-mouthed parrot from Aladdin. A few moments into the show, Iago interrupts explaining his grand plans to jazz up the show, with Zazu following him into the main show room.
Zazu warns Iago on multiple occasions not to toy with the Enchanted Tiki Room, as the tiki gods will not be very happy. The show continues with a number of musical numbers, including some performed by the tikis themselves.
I wish I had more to say about Zazu and the Enchanted Tiki Room (Under New Management), but unfortunately Zazu doesn’t play a very large roll in the performance, as Iago quite literally steals the show from all of the other birds.
So concludes our A to Z tour of the Magic Kingdom. Thanks for stopping by each Saturday over the past six months–I hope you enjoyed the tour!!
