“Ninety-Nine Footballs Walked Into A Bar…”

One of my favorite aspects of Disney’s Hollywood Studios are the Citizens of Hollywood, commonly referred to as Streetmosphere. The Cast Members who play the various citizens of Hollywood do a spectacular job interacting with guests, as they’re able to ad lib about practically anything.

During a recent trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I was meandering down Sunset Boulevard, browsing the stores and enjoying the sights and sounds of the theme park. As I approached the entrance to the Theater of the Stars (the theater where Beauty and the Beast: Live on Stage! is performed), I saw a bunch of Hollywood’s most famous citizens setting up equipment for a show. It turned out to be one of their more popular shows, “Ninety-Nine [blanks] Walked Into A Bar,” hosted by talent agent Jack Diamond.  The show’s contestants were:

  • Officer William Club (don’t call him Billy Club!)
  • Vladimir Pooey, Director (“If you’ve seen one of my films… you’ve seen POOEY”)
  • Tootsie Du Jour, Actress
  • Bucky Greenhorn, Hollywood’s Next Leading Man
  • Dorma Nesmond, Actress
  • Otto von Bonn Bahn, Director

If you’ve never seen the show, the format is very simple.  Jack Diamond speaks with guests, asking what they do for a living and to name an item they use on a daily basis.  Armed with that information, Diamond has each contestant tell the joke “Ninety-Nine [blanks] Walked Into A Bar”, filling in the blank with the item mentioned by the guest.  After each contestant has told a joke, Jack Diamond asks the crowd to applaud for their favorite joke; whichever contestant receives the least applause is eliminated.

During the show, a number of great items were used in the jokes, including footballs, handcuffs, cameras and parachutes. After four rounds, the remaining contestants were Bucky Greenhorn and Dorma Nesmond.  The items used in the final joke were computers and Dorma Nesmond went first, telling a decent joke (unfortunately, I don’t remember exactly what it was). Bucky went last with: “Ninety-Nine computers walked into a bar.  The bartender said ‘I’m sorry, but we don’t serve computers here.’ The computers said ‘We didn’t come in to get a drink; we’re here to hook up with your servers.’”  The winner was obvious as the crowd broke into roaring applause in response to the joke.

The next time you’re at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and aren’t in a rush to do something (fat chance, right?), take some time to interact with the Citizens of Hollywood; you won’t be disappointed!

Oh yeah… for those who were wondering, the punch line to the joke in this post’s title was: “The bartender said ‘I’m sorry, but we don’t serve footballs in here.’  The footballs said ‘Fine, but we want our quarterback.’”

I completely agree, AJ. I can only think of two good reasons for people not slowing down to enjoy this stuff: 1) it’s their first trip to the park and they have lots to see, or 2) they’re running to Toy Story Midway Mania! at the start of the day.

Other than that, why not stop, buy a snack and enjoy the wonderful performances put on by awesome Cast Members?

Same with the other parks; I always feel bad for the folks who rush right by DeVine in Animal Kingdom. She’s a fascinating performer.
